After 20 years of teaching in special education, I’ve learned a thing or two about keeping the chaos of the classroom at bay. I have even learned some tricks to creating a zen-like learning environment to help manage the everyday craziees that comes with teaching a group of children at the same time who are all oin differnt levels, with different persoanalities and different learning styles. That being sais let’s dive into some strategies to help you reclaim your classroom sanity!

1.The Power of Labels: Labels are a teachers best friend. They’re like tiny superheroes that rescue you from the endless quest of “Where did I put that?” Invest in colorful labels for everything—you can even buy themed labels so it matches throughout the classroom.

Label everything!

  • Kids desks ( name tags, table color, etc)
  • Cubbies, closets, hooks ( label with names or numbers)
  • Supplies for kids desks
  • Areas in your classroom ( writing station, math station, reading, static, word wall, SEL, Science, Social studies)
  • Teachers desk/ supplies

2. Clear Containers: Clear storage containers are like magic portals to an organized universe. Use them to store craft supplies, manipulatives, and station materials. When everything has its designated home, you’ll spend less time searching and more time teaching.

3. Tame the Paper : Teachers always have a dreaded paper trail. Try implementing a system for managing paperwork before it takes over your desk. Try a three-tiered tray system labeled “To Do,” “To File,” and “To Copy.” Bonus points for recycling (AKA throw out) anything that doesn’t spark joy.

4. Desk Detox Therapy: Is your desk the epicenter of productivity or a black hole of forgotten assignments? Regular desk detox sessions are crucial. Set aside time each week to declutter and organize. Fridiay’s are a good day to do this as clutter has always built up by the end of the week. Refresh your energy and desk for the upcoming week. You’ll feel lighter, and more organized trust me!

5.Chore Charts : Creating a chore chart or task rotation schedule for classroom duties will help to delegate responsibilities this way everything isn’t always on you. Plus kids love to help! Rotate cores such as line leader, paper monitor, teacher helper, pencil sharpener monitor, clalendar helper, and whiteboard wiper. Not only does it promote teamwork, but it also frees up your time for more important tasks!

6.Let’s Get Digital, Digital: Harness the power of technology to streamline your classroom management. Use apps for attendance, behavior tracking, and lesson planning. Digital tools can be game-changers in reducing paperwork and staying organized on-the-go.

Some apps to use are:

ProCare software

Google Classroom

Class Dojo
