As the school year draws to a close, it’s the perfect time to slow down, reflect, and celebrate all that your students have accomplished. One of the most meaningful ways to do that is by sharing a great book together. End-of-year read alouds can spark important conversations, offer heartfelt goodbyes, and help students process the transition ahead. Whether you’re looking for stories that are funny, sentimental, or inspiring, the right book can bring your class together one last time and leave a lasting impact.

Here are some of my favorites that I have read to my own class over the years:

Do Not Bring Your Dragon to The Last Day Of School– Another year of learning is in the books, and it’s time to celebrate! Dragon loves parties and picnics and playgrounds and is ready to celebrate too. But is it smart to bring a dragon to the last day of school?

A Letter From Your Teacher On The Last Day Of School Through a letter written from the teacher’s point of view, the class is invited to reflect back on the memories, connections , and challenges met. The letter expresses how proud their teacher is of them, and how much they will be missed. Students will also leave on that last day knowing that their teacher is cheering them on for all of the exciting things to come in the future.

The Memory Jar– Freda begins to save all her favorite things. But it turns out that saving everything also means she can’t enjoy anything, and Freda realizes that some things are best saved as memories.

And Then Summer Comes– From flip-flops and hide-and-seek to fireworks and ice-cream trucks, from lemonade stands and late bedtimes to swimming in the lake and toasting marshmallows. Counting down the days til summer.

I Wish You More This book is filled with endless good wishes. Wishes for curiosity and wonder, for friendship and strength, laughter and love.

Instead of Goodbye-Everyone has a dream, and sometimes that dream begins with a teacher. Instead Of Goodbye is a heartwarming story that captures the feeling of the last day of school. As the class explores their dreams and plans for the future, the teacher bids farewell to her class using the phrase “I’ll see you when I will!”

Goldfish On Vacation H, Little O, and Baby Em are stuck in the city for the summer with only their pet goldfish for company. It’s looking like it might be a pretty boring vacation, but one day, something exciting happens.

Goodbye School– Franny loves her school. She’s played, read, studied, and even napped here. How can she say goodybe? As Franny prepares to move to a new school, she takes time to reminisce and cherish her old school.

Last Day Blues -These students worry that their teacher will miss them while they are gone for the summer. So they come up with a way to make sure she won’t be too sad. But the teachers have some plans of their own.

Happy Dreamer While the world tells us to sit still, to follow the rules, and to color inside the lines, Happy Dreamer celebrates all those moments in between when the mind and spirit soar and we are free to become our own true dreamer.

Love Is When a little girl finds a duckling who has wandered away from the park onto the city streets, she takes it home to care for it. The baby duck requires constant attention—early morning feedings, bathing, and tidying—until the time comes to say goodbye. When her pet has grown too big for the bath, the girl takes the full-grown duck back to the pond.

Last Day Blues Mrs. Hartwell’s students worry that their teacher will miss them while they are gone for the summer. The class comes up with a way to make sure Mrs. Hartwell won’t be too sad. But Mrs. Hartwell and the other teachers have some plans of their own.

What Will You Be? A stunning lyrical picture book that tells the story of one girl who is always asked a simple question: What will you be when you grow up?

Scribble Stones This story starts off with a little stone who thinks he will be become something amazing but then soon realizes he had become a dull paper weight. He’s on a mission to become something greater and in the process meets scribble and splatter and they all come up a creative way to bring joy to thousands of people.

Goodbye For Now– The last day of school is always so bittersweet! Teachers and students spend all year growing and taking care of one another, learning with each other, and making fun memories that will last a lifetime.
